Members of the Pennsylvania State Police investigated 460 crashes over the New Year’s holiday enforcement period Dec. 31, 2019 through Jan. 2, 2020.
Of the collisions investigated, 30 involved alcohol, 87 people were injured and one person was killed in a single fatal crash.
Troopers also arrested 279 people for driving under the influence during the three-day holiday enforcement campaign. The total is a decrease from the 406 DUI arrests made over the holiday period last year, which spanned four days.
In addition to DUI enforcement, troopers issued 6,410 speeding citations, 476 seat belt citations and 66 child safety seat citations.
These statistics cover only incidents investigated by state police and do not include statistics on incidents to which other law enforcement agencies in Pennsylvania responded.
The following crash data reviews statistics for 2019 and 2020.
During the four-day enforcement period in 2019, police responded to 642 crashes, four of which were fatal crashes in which four people died. According to police, 155 people were injured in the crashes and 64 of the crashes were alcohol-related accidents, including one fatal accident.
In 2020, over three days, state police responded to 460 crashes, one of which was a fatal crash in which one person died. According to state police, 87 people were hurt in the crashes and 30 of the crashes were alcohol-related accidents. The fatal crash was not an alcohol-related crash.
In 2019, state police made 406 DUI arrests during the four-day enforcement period and issued 6,370 speeding citations. According to state police, 115 child seat citations were issued and 476 seat belt citations were issued. Other citations issued totaled 8,698.
In 2020, state police made 279 DUI arrests during the three-day New Year’s holiday enforcement period and issued 6,410 speeding citations. According to state police, 66 child seat citations were issued. The number of seat belt citations issued remained at 476. Other citations issued totaled 9,238.
