A Northampton County man, naked, yelling and gesturing when he surrendered in the early-morning hours of Dec. 27 following a standoff with police that lasted more than six hours, has been charged after he threatened to kill his wife.

Lehigh Township police officers were dispatched 9:28 p.m. Dec. 26 to the 1100 block of East Stateside Drive, in the Danielsville section of the township, for a domestic dispute.

According to the report, a woman met officers down the street and told them her husband, Joseph Carmody, 52, had been huffing and drinking alcohol all day and began arguing with her about dinner.

As the argument continued, Carmody became violent, damaging the inside of the home and telling his wife he was going to kill her.

The victim was able to escape the home and call 911.

Carmody refused to come outside to speak with police and told officers he had a shotgun. He said if police entered the home, there would be a “showdown.”

Police verified Carmody did have a firearm in the house, so township police contacted the Pennsylvania State Police Emergency Response Team to assist with the standoff.

The standoff ended about 3:45 a.m. Dec. 27, when Carmody came out of the house naked, yelling and gesturing at the police.

Carmody was taken into custody and transported to Easton Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

He was then transported to Northampton County Prison, central booking, to be arraigned.

Assisting at the scene were Pennsylvania State Police, Moore Township Police Department, Lehigh Township Fire Police, Lehigh Township Fire Department and Northampton Regional EMS.

Carmody has been charged with terroristic threats (related to domestic violence), harassment and disorderly conduct. Police said additional charges may be added.
