PHS girls take top spot at Cedar Crest Classic

The Parkland boys and girls swimming teams made a splash over the first part of the season.

The Trojans has success at the annual Cedar Crest Classic Invitational and recently beat Cumberland Valley in a nonleague meet.

Kayla Johnson (100 freestyle, 200 freestyle) and Annie Walls (butterfly, 500 freestyle) both won two individual events for the Trojan girls team against Cumberland Valley.

Parkland’s Gavin Webb (200 free, 500 free) and Shawn Kushner (individual medley, breaststroke) won a pair of boys individual events in the nonleague dual meet.

In the early-season Cedar Crest Classic Invitational, Parkland’s girls team took first place out of a field of six teams. Parkland posted a girls team score of 595. Emmaus (446) was second, while Hatboro-Horsham (374) finished third in the girls team standings.

Parkland took second place in the boys standings at the CCC Invitational. The Hornets finished with 576.5 points, while Parkland garnered 385. Plymouth-Whitemarsh took third at 309.5.

Parkland’s girls won two relays and five individual events at the meet.

The Lady Trojans took first place in the meet’s first event as the 200-yard medley relay team touched the wall first at the meet, swimming the final in 1:52.72. That foursome included Devon Corvaia, Caroline Fahrney, Johnson and Laurel Krause. Parkland capped the meet with a win in the final girls event, the 400 freestyle relay. That team included Claire Weaver, Kira Colarusso, Fahrney and Johnson. They won in 3:44.51.

Johnson also took first place in 200 freestyle in 1:58.53 with teammate Olivia Stevenson finishing second in the event. Johnson also won the backstroke with a finals time of 1:01.65.

Stevenson took the top spot in the 500 freestyle, swimming the finals in that event in 5:23.7.

Fahrney earned first place in two events, taking first place in the 200-yard individual medley with a 2:12.97 in finals and winning the breaststroke with a time of 1:09.09 in finals.

James Zhang won the boys 200 freestyle event with a finals time of 1:46.07 at the Cedar Crest Invitational.

Webb earned a first-place finish in the boys individual medley with a time of 1:59.83.

Editor’s Note: In a recent Parkland Press article recapping a Trojan swim meet against Liberty, some Hurricane swimmers are relay teams were listed as event winners due to the mercy rule.

Parkland swimmers (and relay teams) who finished first in the meet against Liberty but were not credited because of the mercy rule include: the boys 200-yard freestyle relay team of Webb, Kushner, Willard and Isaih Moreef; Weaver in the girls 100 backstroke; Zang in boys 100 breaststroke; Madison Tewksbury in girls 100 breaststroke; Nicholas Zaffiro in 100 breaststroke; the girls 400-yard freestyle relay team of Walls, Krause, Weaver and Johnson; and the boys 400-yard freestyle relay team of Matthew Greer, Moreef, Zaffiro and Zhang.
