Area residents and motorists are weighing in with their comments about the new $33.5 million Coplay-Northampton Bridge, which opened Dec. 19.
Most are more than pleased with the bridge, which opened six months ahead of schedule.
Surprising to drivers are the new stop signs erected on Chestnut Street at Front Street. The additional stop signs make the intersection a four-way stop.
Drivers are confused about the four-way stop, with a traffic light just a block away.
The concern is that, during the afternoon commuter rush, vehicles will be backed up on the bridge, with drivers stopped for the red light.
A dramatic upshot in business has been noted at the Giant Food Store, 202 Chestnut St. It was said more checkout counters were opened to serve the rise in patrons.
While Giant has not released any statements, the large parking lot has been overflowing with vehicles, residents have reported. Taking into account the Christmas food shopping, the bridge opening is said to be a major factor.
It was also noted Mario’s Pizza, Samuel Owens Restaurant and Bar and other local eateries have all noticed an immediate rise in business since the bridge opening.
One comment from the public was about the sidewalk on the bridge. It was questioned why the sidewalk was installed on the south side. People noted they believe a majority of the foot traffic would be heading to stores and such on the north side.
It was also noted the bridge has a bicycle lane on the north side.
A tight turn from Main Street in Northampton onto the bridge raised some talk as well.
Everyone talked to agreed the new bridge is a major plus and the public is happy not to have to deal with the detours any longer.
