Board grants wavier to township
South Whitehall commissioners have granted a waiver of subdivision and land development review to the township for renovations and construction at the municipal complex along Walbert Avenue, South Whitehall.
A resolution adopted in October states the project does not need to be reviewed and approved as a subdivision or land development, nor does it need to be reviewed by the township planning commission.
The resolution does not waive or modify any other requirements of the township or any other applicable regulations of county, state or federal agencies.
The township will still have to undergo outside agency reviews for approvals such as highway occupancy permits, stormwater requirements and environmental standards, and the project will have to meet the requirements of the township building code.
Township officials report the site design is complete and is zoning compliant.
Kevin Reid, of PFM financial management, presented a draft ordinance for a financing action for the campus development.
“This is a general framework to set the stage,” Reid said.
The endeavor is designed to provide additional space and updated facilities for employees and the public.
The exterior of the building at 4444 Walbert Avenue will remain unchanged, but an addition will be constructed behind the existing space for administrative personnel.
The lower level of the new section will provide increased space and improved conditions for the police department.
A second new addition primarily for public use will be constructed on the east side of the building.
The new structure will include a meeting room with seating for 100 people and restrooms.
Director of Finance Steve Carr estimates the total cost could be around $11.5 million based on current prices per square foot.
