Fall shows close; winter sports begin
Freedom’s theater company has recently held its fall show, “It’s A Wonderful Life.” The show ran Nov. 21 through 24 with over 40 members in the cast.
I interviewed Trevor Mann, a member of the cast who has also been in “Once Upon a Mattress,” “A Christmas Carol,” and “Anything Goes” through Freedom. The role he played in the show was Sam Wainwright.
“My favorite part was the phone call scene, that was pretty much the main scene I was in,” said Mann when asked about his favorite part regarding the character he played.
The audition process was most definitely one of the most nerve-wracking parts of the show. Normally, Freedom doesn’t present a musical in the fall but this show had only two songs. The actors were not required to sing during auditions, however, they did have to read from the script. The director, Justin Amann, emailed the actors parts of the script before hand he was interested in hearing them read. Auditions were held in late September.
As the show has come to a close, winter sports are starting the 2019-2020 season. Boys wrestling qualified for districts this past season. Unfortunately, they lost in the first round against Nazareth. Some of the best wrestlers last year were Luis Vargas, Max Marrero and Connor Huber. All three of these wrestlers were regional qualifiers. Freedom wrestling had four medalists last year at districts: Jared Jenkins, Luis Vargas, Connor Huber and Max Marrero. Freedom wrestling’s overall record last season was 15-6 with losses to Liberty, Nazareth, Northampton, Emmaus, Easton and Cedar Cliff.
“We’ll be a better team this year than we were last year for sure,” said Dante Terenzio, head wrestling coach. “The goal is just to improve on last year’s results and improve every day in the wrestling room.”
Another upcoming winter sport is boys basketball. Last season, the boys basketball team lost in the league playoffs on the last second shot to Nazareth. In the district playoffs, they won the first round and lost in the second round in over-time to East Stroudsburg South. Top players last year included Malek and Caleb Mims. Caleb ended up scoring the most points and Malek Mims ended up having the most steals in school history.
“We are going to have a new focus and a motivation like no other,” said Joseph Stellato, head boys basketball coach. “We are chip-chasing, we are chasing that championship and I really believe that this is the team that can do it. So when you ask me how far we can go, we’re going to go to the championship and we’re going to win it.
