Salisbury High School Wall of Honor to recognize alumni service veterans

Salisbury Township Police Department Officer Richard Nothstein is taking names and making a list.

It’s a good list.

Nothstein, Salisbury High School’s resource officer, is looking for the names of a few good men and women – school alumni and staff who have served in the armed forces.

A recently developed Wall of Honor in the school’s main hallway, presented by the Salisbury Police Officer’s Association and the Salisbury Township Police Department as part of its community outreach, features a large American flag and service logos from each of the five branches of U.S military service.

As those who have served make their names known, Nothstein will arrange for a business-card sized plaque with the name, service branch and service years to be prepared and the plaques will be affixed to the stripes of the flag to honor alumni and school staff members’ military service.

The idea for the wall of honor grew out of a community dinner served on Veterans Day at the school in which veterans were honored and talked about their service experiences with others who registered and attended the event.

Nothstein arranged a brainstorming session with the school’s Social Studies teachers, Barry Frick, Mike Barna and Tanya Kennedy, to discuss additional ways to honor those who had gone on to serve in the armed forces. The Wall of Honor grew out of that discussion, as a tangible and permanent way to recognize military service.

Since no record exists of those who have served over the years, Nothstein said he would begin using the school’s and the police department’s social media to solicit the information. He developed a form that will be available online to seek the information. Going forward, a new wave of solicitation will be developed and publicized with each patriotic holiday.

A link to the form is available on the school’s Facebook page and the police department’s Facebook page. Reference Wall of Honor on each of the social media pages to be taken to the link.
