Our special blessing for Thanksgiving was to have Lydia home from San Francisco for a week. Originally, she was going to come home for Caroline’s birthday, but work requirements forced her to postpone her trip. Matt and I decided to keep it a secret, which was no easy task. We dodged the question “Will Lydia be home for Thanksgiving?” with the response “She’ll be home for Christmas.” Finding an excuse to pick her up in Newark at dinnertime was a little more difficult. When Ben was invited to the Eagles/Seahawks game, everything started to fall into place. Caroline and her boyfriend were out for the afternoon and we postponed dinner with my mother. I thought we had it made. In the meantime, on the day Lydia was due to arrive, we got an email from Netflix saying there had been a new sign-in on our account and requiring that we change our password. We suspected it might be Lydia on her layover in Los Angeles. Matt asked Caroline about it since she had watched Netflix at a friend’s house and then said, “Well, it might have been Lydia at the airport.” He immediately tried to cover up his slip of the tongue, but Caroline caught it. She played along, though, and at least Ben and my mother were surprised.
