As autumn gradually turns into winter, Bethlehem Catholic HS also makes the transition from fall to winter sports. The season of fall sports was yet another success for Bethlehem Catholic, with the field hockey, football, girls tennis, boys and girls soccer, and girls volleyball teams all making it to Districts.
The girls tennis team finished with a remarkable 16-0 regular season record, making this the sixth undefeated record in Beca tennis history. The boys soccer team accomplished a milestone of their own, as this was the first time in roughly 10 years that Beca boys soccer qualified for Districts.
Winter sports are underway, with varsity wrestling and basketball teams eager to continue their winning streaks. The wrestling team has won four Class 3A District titles in the last five years and won the 3A State title last year, making it the seventh State title in program history. The boys basketball team has won three straight District 11 4A titles, along with two straight EPC titles. The girls basketball team has won three straight EPC and District 11 4A titles, along with two 4A State titles in the last three years. These teams are preparing for their season openers, coming Dec. 6 for boys basketball, 7 for girls, and 11 for wrestling.
Beca is excited to announce the new bowling club. Founded by juniors Shadwick Yoder and Colin Core, and run by French teacher Melissa Magliochetti, the team plays against three local area schools. Students have responded enthusiastically, and there are now more than 20 students registered as members.
Beca is very proud of all its student athletes, but a special congratulations goes to Tavion Banks, Taliyah Medina and Matthew Styczen. Tavion Banks (senior) set the record for all-time leader in touchdowns this past football season. Banks, on his 67?th? career touchdown, passed the previous leader Eddie Scipio, a 2002 graduate.
Tavion Banks has recently committed to Stony Brook University to continue his football career. Taliyah Medina (senior), a member of the Bethlehem Catholic girls basketball team, has recently signed with Villanova University. Taliyah started varsity as a freshman and was an immediate star. Unfortunately, a torn ACL kept her out for the entirety of the 2018-19 season. Medina had to watch from the sidelines as her team went on to win a State title. However, Taliyah Medina never once despaired. She began working with Coordinated Health to strengthen her leg and help her recover from the terrible injury.
Now, after putting in the work, her efforts have paid off. Matthew Styczen (Junior), is an All-American swimmer for two consecutive years. He placed 11th at the 2018 Eastern Winter Junior Nationals in the 400 IM and is ranked fourth in the state of Pennsylvania and 37?th? in the class of 2021. Styczen has recently committed to the University of Virginia.
This past November, the Beca Theater produced their fall play, “?Pack of Lies,” by Hugh Whitemore. The play was a huge success due to the stellar performances of the cast. They were Abby Roberts (senior), Jacob Moser (senior), Alyssa Tonetti (senior), Kailey Adeleye (sophomore), Colin Core (junior), Eoin Egbert (freshman), Mikhayla Rogowsky (senior), Samantha Hoffman (junior), Sydney Bennett (freshman), and Meghan Thornburg (junior).
The Theater wasted no time jumping right into rehearsals for the spring musical, ?“Seussical,” ? which is sure to be another magnificent performance.
