STUDENT OF THE WEEK
Q. Who are the members of your family: parents, siblings and pets?
A. I live with my parents Peihua and Yan.
Q. What do you most enjoy about being a senior at Emmaus High School?
A. As a senior, I enjoy knowing the people around me very well after spending almost four years together so there’s an established atmosphere of belonging. I also enjoy seeing that there were people from freshman year who I did not talk to and who I have now become good friends with.
Q. What is your favorite subject? Why?
A. My favorite subject is economics because the concepts can be abstract yet concrete at the same time. I find that in the society, economics is what drives the most important functions of society forward, serving many roles at the same time so I find satisfaction in being able to partake in the effort. I have also garnered a lot of interest toward how the economy runs in general and how the economic outlook impacts businesses, etc.
Q. Have you received any special awards or recognition?
A. Recently I have been awarded PSAT National Merit Commended Scholar as well as AP Scholar with Distinction. I am also avidly involved with music, specifically the violin and have auditioned and been selected into Pennsylvania Music Educators Association District 10 Orchestra and into PMEA Northeast Region Orchestra. I am also a part of Tri-M Music Honor Society for my involvement in music. For piano, I have received the National Federation of Music Clubs LFO 2015 award and the National Federation of Music Clubs Piano Solo 2018 award. As a part of the girls tennis team, I recently placed third in the Eastern Pennsylvania Championships for third doubles. Throughout high school, I have also been awarded various academic awards including Excellence in Academic Achievement, and have been inducted into National Honor Society and National Spanish Honor Society. The summer before 11th grade I also won second place for an original business pitch in front of Lehigh Baker Institute judges at Lehigh University.
Q. What are your favorite extracurricular activities?
A. As a junior, I founded the economics and investment club to further my knowledge on economics and other business related topics outside of the classroom. In the club, I enjoy meeting new peers who share the same interests, and as president, I enjoy planning club activities. Throughout high school, I have been involved with Collage Magazine and I enjoy being able to look at various pieces of artwork and writing submissions from other talented students at EHS while being able to write poetry and short stories. This year I serve as editor-in-chief and I enjoy leading the creation of the magazine. In regard to my extracurricular activities in sports, I have been on the girls tennis team since ninth grade and this year I am captain of the team. Each season has left deep memories that I will never forget, including the close bonds that I have created with my teammates.
Q. What is your next goal after high school?
A. After high school I intend on majoring in either economics or business in college.
Q. What do you consider your biggest challenge to date?
A. My biggest challenge to date was probably dealing with the tennis season, my other extracurricular activities, schoolwork, as well as writing essays for college applications.
Q. For what would you like to be remembered?
A. I would like to be remembered as motivated, persevering and proactive with not only my peers but also with the community around me.
Q. Whom do you admire? Why?
A. I admire both of my parents who grew up with less opportunities compared to the opportunities I have today. They always believed that hard work and determination will eventually pay off, which is something I also apply in my life.
Q. Do you have any advice for your peers?
A. Get involved with everything and anything that you are interested in, whether it be through clubs or summer camps, and be open-minded about everything. Never close a door on an opportunity before you have even considered it because the one career you thought you weren’t interested in might just be the one thing you’re most passionate about.
