Concordia Lutheran Church will have a Thanksgiving Eve service 7 p.m. Nov. 27. Local food bank offerings will be collected during the service. There will be a pie fest immediately following the service.

The Lower Macungie Township Historical Society will hold Christmas at the Log House 4-7 p.m. Dec. 8. There will be an open house at the historic Bortz log house with tours by candlelight, warm drinks and cookies and harp music. The house will be decorated for Christmas in period fashion and lighted by candles. All are welcome. The log house is located near the eastern entrance of the Hamilton Crossings shopping center.

The 11th annual craft/vendor fair will be held 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 23 at the Lower Macungie Township Community Center. Over 100 crafters and vendors will participate. Brookside Deli will offer lunch 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. A free shuttle from the parking lot to the door will be provided by Corporate Limousine.

The Lower Macungie Township Board of Commissioners and staff are holding the 14th annual Troop Support Program to collect donated items to send to township residents in the armed services who won’t be home for the holidays. To register a loved one in the holiday program, call 610-966-6924 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Donations of food, toiletry items, batteries, magazines and phone cards will be accepted at the community center 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday; 8 to noon Saturday and 8-10 a.m. Sunday through Nov. 30. A list of acceptable donations is available at the community center.

The community center is collecting children’s new pajamas and books during the fall and holiday season. Items will be donated to local area children. A large receptacle is located in the lobby through Dec. 23.

Curbside leaf collection continues through Dec. 2. Leaves must be out for collection by Dec. 2.

The community center offers a number of activities. Adult classes include belly dancing, card making, baking and Latin partner dance. Youth classes include cooking, Kindermusik, Minecraft, multi-sport skills, parent’s morning out, robotics, soccer and cooking. For more information, call 610-966-6924.

The Lower Macungie Library will be closed Nov. 28-30 for the Thanksgiving holiday.

The Lower Macungie Library Book Club will meet 10:30 a.m. Dec. 4 to discuss “Educated: A Memoir” by Tara Westover. The book for Jan. 8, 2020 is “Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine” by Gail Honeyman.

There will be an “I’m Thankful” program for grades kindergarten through third 6:30-7:15 p.m. Nov. 25 which includes a story, activity and craft.

There will be a Build It! Block Party for ages two and up 10:30-11:30 a.m. Dec. 4 with wooden blocks.

There will be a Winter Wonderland featuring The Polar Express 10 a.m. to noon Dec. 7. There will be a reading of “The Polar Express” including cocoa and cookies; pajamas are encouraged. Then visit the Winter Wonderland with crafts, games and a sELFie station. Open to all ages; no registration is needed. Supplies are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Preschool Picasso for children ages three to five will meet 10:30 a.m. Dec. 9. The program includes a story and a more complex creative project.

Creation Station for ages two and up will be held 6:30-7:30 p.m. Dec. 16. There is a different project every month.

The Teen Advisory Board for grades six through 12 will meet 3:30-4:30 p.m. Dec. 20 for a holiday party. Teens will swap gifts, make an ornament, play a game and eat. Bring a wrapped gift less than $5 for the gift swap.

The fall book sale will be held 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 22 and 23. Member preview night is 5-7:30 p.m. Nov. 21. The bag sale begins 2:30 p.m. Nov. 23. Memberships are available at the door. All proceeds will benefit the library.

The next Friends of the Library meeting is 10 a.m. Jan. 18, 2020 in the library. The Friends are no longer accepting book donations for the fall sale. Book donations will resume in early 2020.

The winter yard waste hours are noon to 5 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Yard waste permits are required for drop-off.

Happy 21st Birthday, dear Caroline!

When I was growing up, we always stored our batteries in the refrigerator. My father maintained they would last longer stored there. Over the years, I have heard varying opinions on that theory; nevertheless, we have always stored our batteries in the fridge and that’s where everyone knows to find them. Fast forward to present day, we got a text from Lydia saying, “Today I was reminded that many people do not keep their batteries in the fridge. My boyfriend’s remote was running low on battery so I asked if I should check if there are any extras in the fridge and I was met by the blankest stare.”
