Tennis team concludes season

With the final chapter closed on another Whitehall girls tennis season, the storyline will reflect another strong season for the Zephyrs.

They finished the season 7-8, losing a couple of tight matches down the stretch that prevented them from qualifying for the District XI AAA Girls Team Tennis Championship.

In their final five matches, they lost 4-3 to Northampton, and dropped a close 5-2 match against Nazareth. Head coach Alex Green said that were in the match with the Blue Eagles, and were on the verge of knotting it 3-3 where it would have come down to another tiebreaker at No. 1 doubles. However, injuries scuttled those comeback plans.

They also recognized their strong senior class against Emmaus as Noel Yacoub, Nicole Asmar, Heylee Chan, Marina Fayez, Sydney Holderman and Delana Spencer played their final home match against the Green Hornets.

Green said that it’s been wonderful coaching all of them and praised their senior leadership.

“They have all been fantastic,” he said.

They’ll lose 2/3 of his singles lineup as both Yacoub and Asmar will graduate. He said that both players have been instrumental in getting them back to a spot where they can compete with the best the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference has to offer.

Yacoub, who played No. 2 singles, was 9-3 heading into the match, while Asmar, the No. 3, was 8-4.

They’ll also say goodbye to Chan who was sturdy at No. 2 doubles along with Emily Tran for the last two years. She was a steadying force in that lineup, and Green could often lean on her and Tran to come through in big moments.

With all three logging a lot of varsity playing time over their careers, Green said that the trio will be hard to replace, not just in talent but in leadership as well.

“They all have such great attitudes,” he said.

Green said that all three brought a lot to the court and competed with everything they had.

He said that Holderman, Fayez and Spencer were all great kids who came to compete every day.

He said it will be tough to see them go.

“They were all-around the best group,” said Green.

As the postseason got underway, only Asmar qualified for the EPC singles tournament. Green tried to make the case for Yacoub to be included as well since she was right on the cusp of the top eight at No. 2 singles.

Additionally Natalia Pedraza, another strong No. 1 singles player among her peers in the EPC, couldn’t crack the top eight. The junior will have another season to make her mark in the league championships.

In the EPC tourney, Parkland’s Joanna Wu won at No1 singles, while Stroudsburg’s Vasilia Briegel won at No. 2 singles, and Trojan Leah Zolotereva won at No. 3 singles.

In doubles action, Parkland swept all three pairings. Erin Joo and Anshika Gupta emerged as champs at No. 2 doubles, while Sophia Lee and Maya Paul were victorious at No. 3, and Kaila Miles and Anabel Stein took home top honors at No. 4 doubles.
