A 2015 Peterbilt tractor-trailer combo carrying an oversize load closed a section of Route 100 at Mohr Lane, Upper Macungie Township, for more than 24 hours after taking down several wires around 2:18 p.m. Nov. 8.
According to Upper Macungie Township police, Gary L. Hughes-Oneal, 38, of Morgan, Utah, was driving the permitted oversize load, accompanied by both lead and rear pilot vehicles.
Police say the front pilot car operator reported he saw approximately 1-inch to 2 inches of his height-pole touch a wire across Route 100, near the entrance to the Applewood neighborhood.
He also told police his height-pole was set at 16 feet 4 inches and the load was at 15 feet 10 inches, which should have left enough room for clearance.
According to police, there is a significant bank to Route 100, which may have contributed to the height of the load in relation to the wires on the outer edge of the roadway.
By the time the big rig stopped, several wires had been pulled down and a utility pole on the north side of Route 100 was sheared, police say.
Power was lost to the lights controlling the intersection and to homes in the Applewood development.
Police say the height of the lead vehicle’s height-pole was measured and confirmed to be 16 feet 4 inches.
The load height was not measured due to the bank in the roadway, and the inability to get an accurate number, police say.
Route 100 was reopened around 4 p.m. Nov. 9.
No injuries were reported, police say.
