The Emmaus Lioness Lions Club will hold a scarf shower 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 2 at Emmaus Triangle Park. The handknitted scarves and hats will be hung on the fence and anyone who needs one is welcome to take it without cost. More than 300 beautifully hand-stitched scarves and hats are offered. The rain/snow date is Nov. 9. You are invited to come out and support the Emmaus Lioness Lions Club in this giving-back-to-the-community event. The Lioness Lions Club meets 6:30 p.m. the second Monday of the week at the Superior Restaurant, 102 Main St., Emmaus.

St. John’s Lutheran Church, Fifth and Chestnut streets, will hold its annual All-You-Can-Eat Spaghetti Dinner, 4 to 7 p.m. Nov. 2. There is a minimal cost for anyone over the age of five. Reservations are not required.

The Emmaus Arts Commission’s annual Student Film Festival will be held 2 p.m. Nov. 3 at the Emmaus Theatre. The arts commission is partnering with the Emmaus Theatre and FireRock Productions to host this event. Doors open 1:45 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at the door. The Emmaus Garden Club will meet noon Nov. 12 at Faith Presbyterian Church, 3002 N. Second St., Emmaus. Jane Kruse, president of South Schuylkill Garden Club, will present a PowerPoint program on “White House Landscape Trends.” She will discuss landscape design changes in the United States over the last 200 years by sharing information about the lawns at the White House. The library staff invites all ages to drop in 4 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 31 for trick or treat. Also, all ages are invited to drop in and listen to Silly and Scary Stories Oct. 31 with the Lehigh Valley Storytelling Guild 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The Emmaus Historical Society will meet 7 p.m. Nov. 20 at St. John’s Lutheran Church Parish Hall, Fifth and Chestnut streets. The program presented by Jeanne Harakal and Andrew Kerstetter will be “Emmaus and the Greatest Generation,” and honors Emmaus veterans who served in World War II. The historical society is always looking for Emmaus-related items and vintage holiday items, especially Christmas, for its displays. As the holidays approach, the society is beginning a new season of gifting. Donors can purchase items from the society’s “Santa’s Wish List and/or “Shine a Light on a Loved One” by sponsoring some of the museum’s holiday decorations in honor of a loved one. The Woman’s Club of Emmaus will host the organization, Senior Moves by Design, 1 p.m. Nov. 25 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 501 Chestnut St. Senior Moves by Design will present information on downsizing. This organization has helped over 800 senior clients to move into homes, cottages and apartments. The meeting is open to the public. Desserts will be served.

Emmaus Borough Council meets 7 p.m. Nov. 4 and 18 in council chambers, 28 S. Fourth St. The offices will be closed Nov. 11, 28 and 29 for the holidays.

Compost site hours change Oct. 29 to Dec. 7. The hours are 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday; 3 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Curbside Leaf collection continues through Dec. 6.

Although there are many civic organizations to thank for their volunteer efforts throughout the year, I would like to call attention to one that occurred this year. A thank you to the Emmaus Rotary Club for volunteering to continue the annual Flag Day observance at the Emmaus Community Park. Next year the event will be held June 14.

The program features fifth and eighth grade students attending East Penn School district who write poems and essays addressing “What does the American Flag mean to me?”

For the last few years members of the Woman’s Club of Emmaus coordinated the program which was founded by the Emmaus Flag Day Association some 50 years ago.
