Camp Invention program approved for summer 2020 in NASD

The Camp Invention summer enrichment program has been approved for the fifth annual year in Northampton Area School District.

NASD board of education voted unanimously 9-0, at the recommendation of the administration, to approve the program, which will be held June 22-June 25, 2020.

Cost for the four-day summer Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) activities program is $185 for grades 2 through 5 and $95 for grades 6 through 8.

The prices are reduced and made possible by a contribution from Northampton Area Konkrete Kids Educational Foundation. There is no cost to NASD for the programs.

In other business at the Oct. 14 NASD board meeting, directors voted 9-0 to approve:

• The resignation of Joan Filipovits, athletic office secretary, for retirement, effective Jan. 6, 2020. Filipovits, a district resident, has worked for the district for 23-1/2 years.

“I’d like to thank her for everything she’s done for the district over the years,” Superintendent of Schools Joseph S. Kovalchik said.

• Voluntary transfer of Patricia McGee from 12-month Northampton Area High School office secretary to 12-month athletic office secretary, effective Nov. 18, with no change in salary

• Assistants to the athletic director, effective Nov. 18, at the designated stipends for the winter sports season - Kyle Haas, winter season, $2,000, and Michael Missmer, winter season, $2,000

• 2019-20 winter season head coaches and assistant coaches with their designated payments, effective July 1 through June 30, 2020

• Armin Steinberger, long-term substitute German teacher, NAHS, effective for the second semester of the 2019-20 school year, pending receipt of proper documentation and credentials, at $297.36 per diem

• Helen Suchajda, short-term substitute special education teacher, George Wolf Elementary School, effective retroactive to Sept. 3 through Nov. 15, at a salary of $125 per day

• Caterina Mengel, long-term substitute special education instructional assistant, Siegfried Elementary School, effective Nov. 11 for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year, at $10.53 per hour

• Sandra Bischof, special education instructional assistant, Siegfried Elementary, effective Nov. 11, at $13.89 per hour, with benefits

• Resignation of Carrie Berger, school psychologist, effective Oct. 31

• Additions and deletions to the substitute listing for the 2019-20 school year

• Revised listing of 68-day short-term substitute teachers for the 2019-20 school year at a per diem rate of $125, with no benefits

• Addition to extracurricular staff and stipends for the 2019-20 school year

• Revised mentor-inductee list for the 2019-20 school year, including the mentors and stipend payment for the 2019-20 school year

• Revised listing of traffic duty monitors and hourly rates, effective retroactive to Aug. 26 through the end of the 2019-20 school year

• Revised master district volunteer list for the 2019-20 school year

• Attendance of eight teachers and administrators at the 2019 Pennsylvania Institute for Instructional Coaching Conference, State College, Oct. 28-29, at an approximate cost of $2,100, included in the 2019-20 board-approved curriculum budget

• Attendance of three world language teachers, April Krempasky, Theresa Wenck and Catherine Salazar, at the Pennsylvania State Modern Language Association Fall Conference, State College, Oct. 25-26, at an approximate cost of $756.91, included in the 2019-20 board-approved curriculum budget

• Ryan Mertz, Tracy Rolles, approximately 65 students and eight-10 chaperones to travel to Orlando, Fla., April 4-8, 2020, at a cost to NASD to not exceed $660, covered in the 2019-20 board-approved budget

• A two-year extension with Provident Energy Consulting LLC, to purchase electricity through fiscal year 2023-24, at a consulting rate remaining at $0.001 per kilowatt hour

• Addendum for Portnoff Law Associates Ltd., to collect NASD’s 2019 delinquent real estate taxes

• 2019-20 budget transfers

• Tax exonerations-changes

• Bills for payment

• Creation of an NAHS student activity account for Kids for Christ

The NASD school board is next scheduled to meet 6:30 p.m. Oct. 28 in the administration building, 2014 Laubach Ave., Northampton.
