Regarded as one of the top receivers in the Lehigh Valley, Whitehall’s Allen Negrete has been living up to his reputation all season.

Through eight games, Negrete leads all receivers with 51 catches for 611 yards for a 11.9 average per catch with seven touchdowns. He also tied the school record for receptions (10) in one game.

Yet, his success among some other’s has not been able to equate into success for the Zephyrs this season.

Whitehall (0-8) has allowed 40 or more point in seven of their games this season, the latest in a 56-21 loss to Nazareth last week.

“I think that the season so far is pretty frustrating because we have a lot of talent on our team,” said Negrete. “But we can’t put it together as a unit and I think that has been one of our biggest problems.”

Negrete has relished his accomplishments, but he would rather have a winning season.

“We have to be more disciplined with our assignments and our jobs,” added Negrete. “I might be having a good season, but none of that matters if we can’t be a team and win a game.”

Senior running back Ali Barkley also has been frustrated due to his team’s woes. He rushed for 95 yards against Nazareth, gaining 76 of them after halftime.

For the season, Barkley has 773 yards on 131 carries for a 5.9 average with nine touchdowns.

“We have a lot of talent here,” said Barkley. “I can see that we have been making progress.

“The little things have hurt us. We need to follow through. We just have to execute better. That has been a big problem for us.”

Being the team’s primary running back, Barkley remains positive that he has maintained his level of effectiveness throughout the season.

“I feel pretty good,” he said. “I don’t feel worn down or like I have lost anything. I have been seeing the holes better and actually getting stronger each week.”

He had a recent visit from older brother Saquon, who could be back in the Giants’ lineup this weekend after his high ankle sprain.

“He (Saquon) came home for a family function,” said the younger Barkley. “He looks good and is really ready to go back out there.

“He always has some good advice for me and I know he still looks out for me.”

Both Negron and Barkley are confident the Zephyrs can rebound in the last two regular season games.

The Zephyrs travel to Bethlehem Friday to play struggling Liberty (2-6) and then have their regular-season finale when they host the annual Cement Bowl clash with Northampton (7-1). The Zephyrs have won the last nine contests against the Konkrete Kids.

“I think they are winnable games,” said Negrete. “We just have to watch film and prepare for them. We also need to come out with an attitude.

“I feel we can finish strong and win the last two games,” added Barkley. “We just have to keep working hard.”
