North Whitehall welcomes new manager

North Whitehall’s new township manager was introduced to the audience by Solicitor Lisa Young during the Oct. 7 supervisors’ meeting.

Christopher Garges will begin his tenure at the end of this month.

In other matters, the township will hold a special event honoring Parkland School District veterans, only, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Nov. 11 at the pavilion behind the Schnecksville Fire Company.

Veterans must preregister at the township office by Nov. 1.

Anyone interested should contact the North Whitehall Township office for more details.

Boy Scout Malachi Yost addressed the board about his project cleaning up a neglected cemetery. Yost has completed his work.

Supervisor Mark Hills stated that the last burial was in 1920.

The board is well pleased with his work.

The two-lot Strohl subdivision plan along Orefield Road was reviewed by supervisors. The plan was approved and waivers granted.

Kaitlyn Mericle and Keaira Lutz of the Girl Scouts approached the board concerning their projects.

Mericle gave an update on her project to render Kolapechka Park more handicapped friendly while Lutz gave her plans for a dog park at Neffs Park.

A discussion was held concerning The Ridings, a subdivision on Schneck, Hickory and Spruce roads.

Developer, Tuskes Homes, represented by Rick Krasley, proposes to close Schneck Road and use Hickory and Spruce as the detour.

They expect the closure to last five to six months.

Supervisors noted if this road were to be closed, there might be a problem with school bus traffic.

The developer’s engineer, Bill Malitsch of Hanover Engineering, assured the audience there would be adequate room for school bus traffic. The first phase will start in the next several weeks. They expect installation of the storm sewers will take approximately 30 days.

A 2019 Case backhoe was acquired under a lease purchase agreement at a price of $124,435.

Michael Koch, in an email to the township, was concerned about the accidents along Route 873.

He said the speed limit of 35 mph through Neffs is too fast. He would like to see PennDOT do a traffic study in the area.

Ron Roth asked the board why North Whitehall does not have a monument dedicated to the veterans of the wars in which this country was involved.
