Lehigh County Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution on Sept. 25 honoring the Northern Lehigh High School Patriot Club.

Club founder, U.S. Army veteran and Northern Lehigh teacher Scott Gerould accepted the honor.

He founded the club six years ago. There are 27 members in ninth through 12th grade and the club is growing.

He told commissioners the club has an offshoot, the Sons of Liberty, in the middle school.

The citation reads in part, “Whereas, the Patriot Club demonstrates respect each and every day through the raising and lowering of the United States flag and the flag of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania following proper flag etiquette.”

The club also participates in community events honoring those who have served and sacrificed, through speaking and assisting at Memorial Day services at Slatington Veterans Memorial Park, and hosting the annual Veterans Day appreciation barbecue.

Gerould said the club encourages students to stand and recite the Pledge of Allegiance. He was accompanied by his wife, Angel, and his daughter, Ava.

In other matters, the board accepted the challenge to end veteran homelessness by the transfer of $30,000 to the Lehigh Valley Homeless Veterans Task Force.

Commissioners urged area residents to join in support of the task force. The money will be transferred from the Economic and Community Development Fund.

Commissioners established a “temporary area of interest fund” to be administered by the Lehigh Valley Community Foundation, and a Homeless Veteran Fund Review Committee of five people with experience in veterans’ services or housing programs, finance and administration to “serve as the advisory committee charged with working with the LVCF.

Funding for improvements to Cedarbrook Senior Care and Rehabilitation, South Whitehall, received a unanimous vote as Lehigh County commissioners approved a 30-year, $76.4 million bond to fund various capital projects through 2022.

Some projects to be funded include replacement voting machines ($2,250,000), police vehicles ($325,000), courthouse updates ($1,480,000) and renovations ($8,100,000), agricultural easements ($3,000,000), and new records management system for all police departments within the county ($2,600,000).

Full cost of the bond will not be known until after the auction slated for Oct. 10.
