LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

STUDENT OF THE WEEK

Q. Who are the members of your family?

A. My family consists of my parents, Mike and Wendy Cox, an older sister Hannah (EHS ’18) and a younger brother Sean who attends Willow Lane Elementary School. We have a dog, Bailey and a cat, Dobbie.

Q. What do you most enjoy about being a senior at Emmaus High School?

A. I like the opportunities the most. I feel like becoming a senior has presented me with more opportunities than previous years. I was able to become the president of the peer tutoring program where I help run the tutoring program at the school during study halls. From gaining insights through tutoring and now in this position of leadership I have been working with the guidance department to develop a peer-led SAT tips and tricks program for underclassmen.

Q. What is your favorite subject? Why?

A. I really enjoy physics, especially the past two years with Mr. Ohl. I am currently taking Advanced Placement Physics C where one problem can take us the entire period to solve. The challenge of the subject is really different than any other class. It isn’t so much about memorization, but building logical thinking skills and problem solving. The classes are definitely hard, but that is what makes it fun.

Q. Have you received any special awards or recognition?

A. Over the years I have received several awards for academics and athletics, but being selected during the end of my sophomore year to be a part of the tutoring program has opened many opportunities for me the past two years.

Q. What are your favorite extracurricular activities?

A. My favorite extracurricular activity is running. I run for the EHS cross country and track teams and have made great friends in the process. Everyone works really hard on the team, is supportive and every season has been more competitive and successful than the previous one.

Q. What is your next goal after high school?

A. After high school I plan to attend Penn State University and Schreyers Honors College to study aerospace engineering. While there I will be joining the Air Force ROTC and training to become an officer in the United States Air Force. I hope after college I can work toward becoming a pilot in the Air Force.

Q. What do you consider your biggest challenge to date?

A. Time management has been the biggest challenge I have faced this year. The college application process, demanding athletics, a part-time job and a heavy course load doesn’t leave a lot of time for relaxation, so it is very easy to get behind quickly. Therefore, it is important I stay proactive with planning the use of my time, so I can complete my responsibilities while also enjoying my senior year.

Q. For what would you like to be remembered?

A. I would like to be remembered by my teachers, peers and friends as a hardworking student who enjoyed learning and mentoring. I also want to be remembered for my pre-race speeches to my teammates so the underclassman can carry on the team spirit tradition.

Q. Whom do you admire? Why?

A. I admire my parents for emphasizing that character, values and integrity matter most and by giving me the independence to make, fix and learn from my own mistakes. I also admire two of my teachers – Mr. Grabfelder, who has helped guide me as a mentor and Mr. Ohl for his unwavering positivity and energy in the classroom.

Q. Do you have any advice for your peers?

A. The main advice for my peers I would have is to just get involved in the school community. You can have an amazing experience at EHS if you move out of your comfort zone and embrace new opportunities.
