Suter advances to district tournament
Salisbury golfer Alex Suter played two very good rounds of golf over the past two weeks.
The first came at the Colonial League Championships at Bethlehem Municipal on Monday, Sept. 23.
Suter shot 82 for 10th place at the event. He was just three shots away from a top-five finish, which would have earned the Falcon senior an exemption into the District 11 Class 2A Championships.
“I was very happy with it,” Suter said. “I blew up at the end. It could have been a great day but it was still a very good day and I’m happy with how I played.”
Suter was 6-over par heading into the final five holes of the Colonial League tournament. He bogeyed his last five holes to finish 11-over par.
While he left last week’s tournament with his district championship fate still in doubt, his finish at leagues motivated him for Monday’s district qualifying tournament, where he shot 88 to finish in the top half of the field and earn a place at districts for the first time in a four-year varsity career.
“I played all right,” Suter said of his round at the qualifier. “It wasn’t my best round ever, but it was still a good round. I’m happy with how everything went.
“I don’t really come into this trying to win anything. Just try to keep up with my group and if I keep up with my group I know I’ll have a good day.”
Knowing the top half of the Class 2A field would advance to districts, Suter went into the qualifier Monday at Olde Homestead hoping to shoot under 90 and he achieved that goal.
“Definitely under 90, but I was just trying to go as low as I can and have a fun day,” he said.
He gave credit to Frank Lupin at Coordinated Health for helping him with his game.
“He helped me out a lot this season with everything from striking the ball to hitting it straighter,” said Suter.
A baseball player and member of Salisbury’s marching band, Suter has been busy this fall. He was making his second appearance at the district qualifier after coming up two shots short last year.
He said he felt relief when he knew he earned a spot in districts and his high school golf career didn’t have to end.
A week earlier in the Colonial League event, Suter was only four shots off the lead ad Notre Dame’s Ben Ortwien and Palmerton’s Tyler Hager shot 78 before Otrwein won in a playoff.
At the district qualifiers, Suter shot the fourth-lowest score in 2A as Moravian’s Evan Eichenlaub and Palmerton’s Logan Kresge tied for first place with 83.
The Falcons’ Tanner Ruth also competed in the district qualifier Monday. He shot 95 for eighth place. He came just two strokes and one place away from advancing.
A week earlier Ruth shot 98 for a tie for 38th place in the Colonial League Championships, while teammate Nick Jewell cared a 96 at leagues for 36th place.
Suter advances to Monday’s district championships tournament at the Steel Club in Hellertown.
“I’m just going to have fun and see where good golf takes me,” he said. “The field is always great in districts. It’s going to be a fun time.”
After high school Suter plans to join the Coast Guard. With most of his high school career behind him, he thought about everyone that helped him along the way.
“Thanks to my family and everybody that supported me,” he said. “Without them this wouldn’t be possible.”
