LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Requests for park use higher than usual

There were a higher than usual number of requests for use of the fields and pavilion at the Northwestern Recreation Commission Community Park during the Sept. 25 meeting of the commission board.

The USSSA asked in August to reserve the dates May 23-25, June 6-7 and July 11-12 for use of the softball fields.

As there were so many dates, the commission wanted to check with the Northwestern Youth Athletic Association to see if it has anything scheduled.

There was nothing and so the dates were approved.

Northwestern Elementary’s Partners in Education wants to have a fun run Nov. 14 or a rain date on Nov. 15.

Cross-country at the high school pizza party wants the pavilion Oct. 24 for a pizza party and the NYAA field hockey team wants to have a picnic at the pavilion on Oct. 20.

All were approved by the rec commission board.

The water, however, had been scheduled to be shut off for the winter on Oct. 20. That date was moved to Oct. 30 to accommodate the last two events.

Maintenance worker Jim Hughes reported the walking trail should have been paved around Sept. 30. Lines separating the trail from the roadway where they run parallel have been marked.

Hughes found a mower for $14,000 with a discount that brought it down to $12,500 through Sourcewell, which he thinks is a government program. Other prices were in much the same range.

A commercial grade mower with a 60-inch deck is needed. His choice was the Hustler costing $12,500 with a gas engine and $14,200 for diesel from Power Pro.

He was told to obtain a written quote for both gas and diesel.

The annual Night in the Country celebration has been scheduled for Aug. 15, 2020. The park will be closed Aug. 12-15, 2020.
