Playground update given for park

South Whitehall will be launching a capital campaign this fall to collect donations for updating the playground and restrooms at Covered Bridge Park.

Parks and Recreation Manager Mike Kukitz explained the need for the new equipment during the Sept. 18 township commissioners’ meeting.

“What we have is from the 1990s,” Kukitz said. “It is not up to snuff with what playgrounds can be nowadays.

“We need more challenging play equipment.”

He noted all kinds of new attractions such as zip lines, electronic items and balance apparatus are available.

In addition, an adult fitness area could be included.

“We want to create a one-of-a-kind park and play area which will impact generations to come,” Kukitz said.

The project fits into the Covered Bridge Park master plan approved five years ago.

The township is seeking outside help to fund the new playground and restrooms.

“We’re going to give businesses and residents an opportunity to contribute to support this project,” Kukitz said. “We’ll have recognition opportunities for donations.”

He invited residents to join staff on the playground committee.

Kukitz also noted finishing touches are being added to the pedestrian walkway which is part of the Jordan Creek Greenway in Covered Bridge Park.

The trail will extend west to Route 309. A ribbon cutting is scheduled for noon Nov. 4.

In other business, township Manager Renee Bickel reported engineering work is necessary at Iron Bridge Road to halt deterioration of the banks alongside the creek.

Director of Operations Randy Cope said the eastbound lane can remain open but the westbound lane bordering the creek bank will have to be closed between Cedar Crest Boulevard and Lapp Road.

“We’re looking for short-term solutions now, then long term,” Cope said. “Stabilizing the stream bed is an option.”

Finance Manager Steve Carr announced the Pennsylvania Street improvement project has been delayed due to rocks at the work site.

Completion date is anticipated to be Oct. 28.
