Buda’s four scores lead Salisbury
Salisbury looked at its Week 6 game against Catasauqua like a business trip. And the Falcons certainly took care of their job early and often.
Senior Timmy Buda accounted for four touchdowns (two receiving and two rushing) as Salisbury shut out Catasauqua on Friday night, 34-0. The Falcons (4-2) held a 25-0 lead at halftime before they were able to start substituting a number of JV players midway through the third quarter.
“After last week we just came in with the mentality that it was a business week and we had to take care of business,” Buda said. “That’s what we did. We came in and started fast. We have some mistakes going into next week to fix, but I think we’ll be good.”
Buda got to work early. He capped Salisbury’s opening drive with a 4-yard touchdown run just beyond the midway point of the first quarter. He then hauled in a 14-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Quintin Stephens for a 12-0 lead.
“We can do a lot of different things,” Falcon head coach Andy Cerco said. “We can run the ball a little bit. We can throw the ball a little bit. We’ve got guys that can catch the ball and make plays. We have so many different options that going into a game, you don’t know who is going to be the guy that is going to be a little more productive that night.”
Junior wide receiver Chad Parton entered Week 6 as the Colonial League’s leading receiver, but it was the other Falcons’ supporting cast that shined against the Rough Riders. On its third possession of the game, it took one Salisbury in front 19-0 with 10:17 to play in the half.
Weston Schaffer and Trey Weber then got in on the scoring midway through the second quarter. The two added to Salisbury’s lead when Weber threw a perfect ball to Schaffer for a 34-yard touchdown.
“I think we come in with the same mindset every week,” Buda said. “We have a bunch of good receivers on this team-more than just me and Chad. If they key on one person, we get the other person the ball.”
Salisbury got the ball to start the second half, and Buda scored from five yards out on its fifth play of the drive. Then, after an interception by Kade Simononis on Catasauqua quarterback Adam Reinhart, Aaron Kahn connected on a 23-yard field goal late in the quarter.
“I think our running game definitely took a step up,” Buda said. “Our linemen were definitely working harder. They all stepped up for us and played a good, physical game.”
Anthony Scarcia, Matt Butz, Ben Krauss, Gaige Marcks and Brandon Brotzman highlighted that offensive line that opened holes for 108 yards on the ground. Buda led the way with 74 of them.
Every Falcon player that suited up on Friday was able to get in the game at least once, and plenty made a number of impressive plays. The biggest may have been an interception by freshman Josh Brooks on the Rough Riders’ final drive.
“I sent one of our assistants up and down the sideline to make sure that everyone got in the game at least once,” Cerco said. “When you are in a game like this, that’s a great opportunity to get those younger kids in. Our kids haven’t had that experience. [The starters] are under the perception that they should play the entire game.
“He wouldn’t have had that opportunity if our varsity guys didn’t take care of what they needed to take care of, and they did. We had a good week of practice. They had a good mentality coming in. We said we were here for a business trip.”
Stephens threw for 111 yard and completed 5-of-6 passes on the night. He eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark on the season as well. Weber completed 7-of-11 passes for 101 yards.
