Just say Yes: Keyboard wizard Rick Wakeman, embarking on his first solo tour of the United States in 13 years, brings his “Rick Wakeman: Grumpy Old Rock Star Tour” to Miller Symphony Hall, Allentown, 7:30 p.m. Oct. 8. The solo concert combines piano music with jokes and insights into his 50-plus-year career. Expect music from Yes, Wakeman’s solo epics and early David Bowie hits, plus arrangements of Beatles’ tunes. Wakeman’s career started as an in-demand session player. His big break came in 1971 when he joined Yes, the prog-rock band inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017. Real Gritty: Nitty Gritty Dirt Band rolls into Penn’s Peak, Jim Thorpe, for a concert, 8 p.m. Oct. 6. Doors open at 6 p.m. Following a 50th anniversary tour, the ensemble grew to a six-piece in 2018 for the first time since the group’s early jug band days. The group is: Jeff Hanna, acoustic guitar, electric guitar; Jimmie Fadden, drums, harmonica; Bob Carpenter, keyboards; Jim Photoglo, bass, acoustic guitar; Ross Holmes, fiddle, mandolin, and Jaime Hanna (son of Jeff Hanna), electric and acoustic guitar. All six members also sing, and when their voices merge, the harmonies add a powerful new component for the legendary band. Their career breakthrough came in 1970 with the release of the record, “Uncle Charlie & His Dog Teddy,” and the single “Mr. Bojangles,” a folksy Top 10 pop hit that remains a staple of their live show.
