Dumpster day Oct. 5
EMMAUS BOROUGH
Updated by Emmaus Borough October 2
“ATTENTION RESIDENTS:
We have a MAJOR CHANGE FOR DUMPSTER DAY. We apologize for the inconvenience. DUMPSTER DAY will STILL OCCUR THIS SATURDAY, October 5th from 8am - 1pm. HOWEVER, the HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE part of the event has been rescheduled due to scheduling and permitting issues. The HAZARDOUS WASTE portion of the event will be held on SATURDAY, OCTOBER 26th from 8am - 1pm. (That is the event where you can bring your old paint, garden chemicals, oil, etc.)
HOWEVER, THIS SATURDAY, bring all of your old junk, tires ($2 each), car batteries ($5 each) electronics, and even items that need freon removed ($25 each) to the Fire Training Grounds from 8am - 1pm to get disposed or recycled. We will have the HAZARDOUS WASTE portion of the event on SATURDAY, October 26th. Again, we apologize for the inconvenience, however, DEP has very specific rules for this type of collection, which requires a licensed chemist from a disposal facility to be at the site with special permitting.”
The borough of Emmaus will hold a dumpster day and household hazardous waste event 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Emmaus fire training grounds, Klines Lane.
The event is for borough residents only – identification will be checked at the gate.
The event will allow residents to dispose of old tires, different chemicals, paints, oil, batteries and other household hazardous waste and other items like an old couch, air conditioner or other bulk items. Educational material will also be distributed at the event regarding refuse, recycling and hazardous waste reduction.
This event is not designed for businesses.
There is a cost for some items such as tires, car batteries, larger batteries and the removal of Freon™ from refrigerators, dehumidifiers, air conditioners and other items.
Items accepted at the event include electronics, household items, tires, items containing Freon™, batteries and household hazardous waste including automotive products such as antifreeze, brake fluid, motor oil and filters, fuels, etc., garden chemicals, such as fertilizers, insect sprays, herbicides, pesticides and weed killer, paint products such as chalk, glue, paint, stain, stripper, thinner and wood preservative, household chemicals such as ammonia, heavy-duty cleansers, naval jelly, tile remover and strippers and universal materials such as batteries, compact fluorescent lamps, thermometers and fluorescent tubes.
Items not accepted include ammunition, explosives, asbestos or any material not in a labeled container or is leaking. Latex paint will be accepted but is not to be included with other chemicals as it is not considered a hazardous waste item and will add cost to the event. The borough is looking for an outlet to donate the paint.
A team of borough employees, volunteers, Whitetail Disposal and several contracted hazardous waste haulers will help dispose of the items. There will be multiple dumpsters on site. Each person will be directed to show their identification.
If there is not a borough resident in the vehicle, the vehicle will be turned away. Payment for different items, such as tires or Freon™ items will be paid at this point, as a log and inventory of the general type of vehicles will be taken.
Vehicles will be directed to dumpsters based on what is in the vehicle. A dumpster for electronic waste, metal, multiple dumpsters for general waste, a dumpster for tires and dumpsters for the hazardous waste will be available. Residents will be required to assist in unloading vehicles; however, our employees and volunteers will do their best to assist residents. After vehicles are unloaded, residents will be directed out to the road.
Residents are permitted to come back to the site as many times as needed.
