Wonder jazz: “Don Braden: Earth, Wind & Wonder,” 7:30 p.m. Sept. 27, opens the “Jazz Upstairs” fall season, Rodale Community Room, Miller Symphony Hall, Allentown. With Braden on saxophone and flute, his latest CD, “Earth Wind and Wonder,” features his quartet performing jazz interpretations of songs by Earth Wind and Fire and Stevie Wonder. Braden has toured the world leading his own ensembles, and as a sideman, including for Betty Carter and Wynton Marsalis. He has recorded 21 CDs, and for film and television shows. Braden gives master classes at schools and universities and runs education programs, including the Litchfield Jazz Camp, Wells Fargo Jazz For Teens, and the Harvard University Monday Jazz Band. The band is back: The Allentown Band, conducted by Ronald Demkee makes its annual September pilgrimage to St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 37 S. Fifth St., Allentown, for a concert, 3 p.m. Sept. 29. The concert features guest soloists Patricia Risley, mezzo soprano, including “Vilyia” from “The Merry Widow” and “O mio babbino caro” from “Gianni Schicchi”; James Vaughen, trumpet, above, including “Trumpet Concert,” by Franz Joseph Haydn, and Eric Gombert, organ, including “Toccata and Fugue in D Minor,” by Johann Sebastian Bach. Vaughen attends the Curtis Institute of Music. Risley has sung at some of the most prestigious opera houses in the world. Gombert is Cantor at St. John’s. The concert is free. Good-will donations accepted.

So Thorogood: George Thorogood and the Destroyers’ “Good To Be Bad Tour: 45 Years of Rock” stops at Penn’s Peak, Jim Thorpe, 8 p.m. Sept. 29.
