Residents ask: What about Huckleberry Road upgrades?

As the most recent configuration of Ridge Farm was displayed during the Sept. 16 South Whitehall planning commission meeting, viewers started to realize, residents of and drivers into the northern section with most of the housing will have to use Huckleberry Road to enter and exit the housing development.

Traffic engineer Rob Hoffman, however, focused only on road improvements to Walbert Avenue and Cedar Crest Boulevard.

He emphasized Penn- DOT is satisfied with the developer’s proposal, but nothing was worked out for Huckleberry Road, as that is a township, not PennDOT, jurisdiction.

Several residents spoke about the inadequacy of Huckleberry Road with its various safety issues, condition and location extending past Kratzer Elementary School.

Dave Tomasic, N. 28th St., commented.

“Traffic is going to be a disaster,” Tomasic said. “No one talks about Huckleberry.”

Township resident Lee Solt questioned what entity would take care of the road.

“Huckleberry Road is in horrible shape,” Solt stated. “Is the township going to be responsible for it?”

Rick Fritz, of Andrew Road stated what he saw as a problem.

“The entire northern section [of Ridge Farm] has to exit on to Huckleberry, and there are no improvements for it,” Fritz said.
