During the Sept. 16 South Whitehall planning commission meeting, Traffic engineer Rob Hoffman reported representatives of Kay Builders spent one-and-a-half years studying 27 intersections which are expected to be impacted by the Ridge Farm housing development in South Whitehall.

“This has been under an extreme amount of scrutiny by PennDOT,” Hoffman said. “There’s going to be increased traffic.

“PennDOT is satisfied the scope of the improvements is adequate for the project.”

He went through various intersections and in general, many will have left turns lengthened, and Cedar Crest Boulevard and Walbert Avenue will be widened.

Making left turns out of Yellowstone Drive will be prohibited.

A three-lane signalized intersection will be installed at Office Center Drive to connect with the southern portion of Ridge Farm.

Hoffman said the top of the hill where Huckleberry Road crosses Cedar Crest Boulevard will be cut down and re-profiled for better sight conditions.

Cedar Crest Boulevard will have multiple lanes north from Walbert Avenue but will shift back to its current configuration past the Huckleberry Road intersection down toward the Troxell building.

Kay Builders will spend between $10 million to $12 million on the PennDOT improvements.

One Parkland high school student stepped forward and expressed concern over how students will be able to get to the school safely with increased congestion that she said is already a problem.

She asked how it will work to have Cedar Crest Boulevard widened from Walbert Avenue to the top of Huckleberry Ridge, then transition back to only two lanes again.

Although residents could ask questions, replies from the developer or township staff were not allowed.

Twenty five individuals requested and received the opportunity to speak.
