A crash involving a 2016 Western Star dump truck and 2017 International Harvester tractor-trailer completely shut down the right lane of I-78 West at 9:35 a.m. Sept. 17 in Greenwich Township, Berks County.
State Police Troop L, Hamburg say Morando Maye, 43, of Baltimore, Md., was driving the dump truck in the left lane of I-78 West and was in the process of overtaking the tractor-trailer driven by Joseph D. Herron, 63, of Fredericksburg, Va., which was in the right lane.
Police say as both trucks traveled westbound, the dump truck crossed into the right lane side-swiping the tractor-trailer.
The impact pushed the tractor-trailer into the northbound concrete barrier, causing it to jump onto and ride the barrier for a period of time before coming to a final rest.
After impact, the dump truck crossed back into the left lane and was driven to the shoulder at Exit 40.
The tractor-trailer, after impact, slid on the concrete barrier before coming to a final rest facing westbound on top of the barrier.
According to police, the area where the crash occurred is a longterm active work zone.
There are signs in place which prohibit trucks and buses from traveling in the left lane of travel.
Morando, who police say, was wearing his seat belt, was uninjured.
Herron, who was wearing his seat belts, sustained suspected minor injuries and also refused EMS transport, police say.
Both trucks were removed by V and M Towing.
Police say Morando was cited for failure to obey traffic control devices.
Kutztown and Hamburg fire departments and Kutztown and Cetronia ambulance corps assisted at the scene.
