The Lower Macungie Historical Society will hold a harvest festival at the Bortz Log House in Wescosville 2-4 p.m. Oct. 6. There will be house tours and refreshments as well as live demonstrations of sauerkraut making and “hit and miss” engines. The museum will be closed that day.
The historical society will host a program “The Mills of Lower Macungie” 2-3:30 p.m. Oct. 20. Jeff Donat will share the history of gristmills and the change in technology.
The Lower Macungie Fire Department will hold an open house 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 12 at the fire station at Sauerkraut Lane. There will be information on fire prevention, face painting, fire truck tours, a medevac helicopter, state police, child fingerprinting, Macungie Ambulance, food and beverages and more.
Curbside yard waste collection will be the week of Oct. 14-18 on the same day as trash collection. Containers/bundles should be placed separately at the curb on the regular collection day. The Lower Macungie Township Board of Commissioners and staff will hold the 14th Annual Troop Support Program to collect donated items to send to township residents in the armed services who won’t be home for the holidays. To register a loved one in the holiday program, call 610-966-6924 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Donations of food, toiletry items, batteries, magazines and phone cards will be accepted at the Lower Macungie Community Center 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday; 8 a.m. to noon Saturday and 8-10 a.m. Sunday through Nov. 30. A list of acceptable donations is available at the community center.
The community center will collect children’s new pajamas and books during the fall and holiday season. Items will be donated to local area children. A large receptacle is located in the lobby through Dec. 23.
There will be a Frozen Adventure 10:30-11:30 a.m. Nov. 2 with your favorite ice queen and her sister and special guests for infants through 12 years old with a parent or caregiver at community center. Advanced registration is suggested and attendance is limited.
The Lower Macungie Garden Club will meet 1 p.m. Oct. 9 at the community center. Master Gardener Linc Coffin will present “Putting Your Garden to Bed” covering procedures to follow for garden cleanup in the fall. Guests are always welcome.
The Lower Macungie Senior Citizens Club meets noon Oct. 7 and 21 at the community center. After a business meeting, members play bingo or card games.
The 11th annual craft/vendor fair will be held 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 23 at the community center.
Curbside leaf collection begins the week of Oct. 21 and continues through Dec. 2. Leaves must be out for collection by Dec. 2.
There will be a father-daughter dance for girls four to 12 years 7-9 p.m. Oct. 5 at the community center. There will be a mother-son Halloween party for boys ages four to 12 years 7-9 p.m. Oct. 18 at the community center. The Lower Macungie Library Book Club will meet 10:30 a.m. Oct. 2 to discuss “In the Sunlight, In a Beautiful Garden” by Kathleen Cambor. The book for Nov. 6 is “The Girl with Seven Names” by Hyeonseo Lee.
At the Lower Macungie Library, a creation station for patrons ages two and up will be held 6:30-7:30 p.m. Oct. 14. There is a different project every month.
There will be a jigsaw puzzle tournament 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 21. There will be two, four and six member teams in student, adult and family divisions, respectively. There is an entry charge.
Board game lovers can “Get in the Game” 6-8 p.m. Sept. 23.
Sept. 24 is National Voter Registration Day: stop by 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. to register to vote.
Members of the Lehigh County District Attorney’s Elder Abuse Task Force will present “Defining Elder Abuse” 6-7:30 p.m. Sept. 25.
Mary Ellen Heckman, associate dean of library services at Reading Area Community College, will present “Find the Leaves of Your Family Tree: Genealogy 101” 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 28. Participants can register for one or all of the three sessions.
Girl Scout Ambassador Saakshi Girotra will present “Let’s Reduce Food Waste!” 10:30 a.m. Sept. 28 for children ages four to seven. The program includes information, a game and craft.
DIY Your DNA for grades four to eight offers hands-on activities to learn about DNA and genetics 2 p.m. Oct. 9.
The teen advisory board for grades six through 12 will meet 3:30-4:30 p.m. to discuss setting goals and staying organized. A snack will be provided.
There will be a Fall 2019 Stitch Camp 10 a.m. to noon Oct. 19 for grades four through 12. Make a Halloween/fall ornament; no experience is necessary and all supplies are included.

The next Friends of the Library meeting is 10 a.m. Sept. 21 in the library. Lower Macungie Library is accepting book donations through Oct. 14. The fall book sale will be held Nov. 22-23.
The Ancient Oaks Garage Sale will be held 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 28. There is no rain date. There will be a hoagie sale in October.
The Ancient Oaks Womens Organization will meet 7 p.m. Oct. 2 at St. Paul’s UCC. There will be a speaker discussing absentee ballots, party change and voting. New members are welcome.
There will be a free document shredding event sponsored by state Sen. Pat Browne, R-16th, state Rep. Ryan Mackenzie, R-134th, and the township 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Lower Macungie Township parking lot.
The community center offers a number of activities. Adult classes include belly dancing, card making, baking, Latin partner dance and string art. Youth classes include cooking, Kindermusik, Minecraft, multisport skills, parent’s morning out, robotics, soccer and cooking. For more information, call 610-966-6924.
A new Saturday open gym time will be offered 10 a.m. to noon for children ages 10-15 with a parent. Family open gym time is 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays for ages infant through 10 years with a parent. Proof of residency is required.
The yard waste hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and noon to 7 p.m. Sunday through Oct. 31. Yard waste permits are required for drop-off.
