Board to meet with Purina

During the public comment section of the Sept. 4 South Whitehall commissioners’ meeting, Dan Spiegel of Antler Court urged the board to ask the Nestle Purina pet food plant to eliminate unpleasant odors from wastewater.

Spiegel reported one evening when he turned off his air conditioner and opened the windows, the smell hit him with a potent “wham.”

He also told the board he has been engaged in a dialogue with Winston Silva, general manager of the facility, for two years.

“I am concerned about the plant,” Spiegel said. “They have made a concerted effort and spent money.”

He noted, however, the odors continue.

“I don’t want to hurt the company,” Spiegel said. “They employ a lot of people.

“[However} Ralston Purina is one of the largest corporations in America. It’s time to get it fixed. Let’s be diligent and have no glitches.”

Spiegel asked whether he could report to the township every time an odor is noticeable to create a record.

Commissioners said he may do that.

Board President Christina “Tori” Morgan noted the plant wastewater issue falls under the jurisdiction of the state Department of Environmental Protection and is not overseen by South Whitehall.

However, she suggested reaching out to Nestle Purina officials.

“Let’s rally them back to the township building and share some of our concerns with them,” Morgan suggested.

Commissioner Glenn Block agreed.

“Let’s contact Purina and tell them we want to roundtable again,” Block said.
