Tennis rebounds for 4-3 win over Easton
Resiliency has been the hallmark of this year’s girls tennis team, and Monday’s win over Easton was further evidence of that fact.
After dropping a tough 4-2 loss to Freedom last week, the girls rebounded with a hard fought 4-3 win over Easton on Monday.
The win raised their record to 6-3, and places them sixth among the 19 District XI 3A teams based on power rankings.
The Zephs got the ball rolling with a win at No. 1 singles as Natalia Pedraza defeated Sadie Jacobs 3-6, 7-6 (0), 6-2. The junior was the model of resiliency in that match, once again battling back after losing the first set. It was Pedraza’s seventh win of the season.
Head coach Alex Green said that Pedraza overcame adversity once again, showcasing her mental and physical toughness.
“Natalia played a phenomenal three-set match after dropping her first set,” said Green. “She dominated a second set tiebreak (7-0) and we felt like we took control of that match at that point.”
The Zephs continued their positive push through the singles matches as No. 2 Noel Yacoub won in straight sets against Hiu Yung Kwok 6-2, 6-2.
Nicole Asmar made it a singles sweep, prevailing in a tough encounter with Victoria Santos as she harnessed a 6-3, 7-5 victory.
Easton began to assert themselves in the doubles matches, winning at Nos. 2-4 to even the match at 3-3. That meant the pairing of Pedraza and Yacoub at No. 1 singles would once again have a bearing on the outcome.
The duo had to weather a spirited battle from Rovers Jacobs and Kwok, outlasting them for the gritty 10-9 (10-8) win.
“Natalia and Noel played a truly remarkable and nerve-wracking match to decide the match in a 10-game break pro-set at No. 1 doubles,” said Green.
Green said that the Jacobs and Kwok forced a tiebreak at 9-9, and then took a commanding 4-2 lead in the tiebreaker. But that only made the Zephyr pair dig deeper.
“Natalia and Noel were not only resilient, they hit some really clutch shots in a tense environment,” said Green. “The whole place was on pins and needles. Their ability to focus under pressure was impressive and it was the difference in the match.”
Green said that the Red Rovers are a much better team than their record indicates and they had to fight and scrap all afternoon.
“We were playing from behind all day long,” he said.
The Zephyrs have three more matches scheduled this week as they play Allentown Central Catholic (9/11), East Stroudsburg South (9/12) and Northampton (9/13).
