Tears flowed down the cheeks of members of Northampton High School’s Class of 1954, as they sang the school’s alma mater, closing with “Auld Lang Syne,” at the class’ final reunion, held Aug. 16 at Northampton Banquet and Event Center.
Emotions ran deep as classmates embraced, reflecting on their days in high school with Konkrete Kids pride.
“It was wonderful,” attendees said, recalling their days at Northampton High School, which was then on Lincoln Avenue and is now a high-rise seniors facility.
Reminiscing at the event were 43 classmates, now in their early 80s. The number was bolstered by members who brought their spouses. The class graduated 134.
Keith Newhard, class president; Richard Schwartz, vice president; and Margaret Kohler, secretary/treasurer, were present. A table filled with school memorabilia, photos, pennants and other items drew much attention. Classmates were able to take home items of their choice.
Holding onto every moment of their final reunion, talk centered on their younger days - outstanding teachers, proms, pep rallies, football games, weekends at the teenage center on Main Street, the one-time Central School, Newberry’s, Coleman’s and Lerner’s.
Classmates from as far as Colorado, Washington, Virginia, New York and New Jersey made the trek for the final reunion, along with those much closer to the borough.
The Class of 1954 originally held reunions every five years. Fifteen years ago, classmates began gathering annually.
