Allentown man in Lowhill crash dies in hospital
A 31-year-old Allentown man died after the vehicle in which he was a passenger was involved in a head-on crash 3:16 p.m. Sept. 3 along Route 100, near Bittners Corner Road, Lowhill Township.
According to Lehigh County Coroner Eric Minnich, Derek T. Brobst, was pronounced dead at 11:12 a.m. Sept. 4 at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township.
The cause of his death was multiple blunt force injuries due to a motor vehicle accident, Minnich said, adding the manner of Brobst’s death as an accident.
According to State Police Troop M Fogelsville, Ashley M. Whiteman, 25, of Palmerton, was driving a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt, in which Brobst was a passenger, southbound when it crossed over into the northbound lane while she was negotiating a right curve.
Police say Emily K. Hummel, 37, of New Tripoli, was driving a 2015 Jeep Wrangler northbound and negotiating a left curve, when she attempted to avoid the Cobalt by swerving left toward the southbound lane, at which time Whiteman attempted to swerve her car right, back into the southbound lane.
This resulted in a head-on collision, which caused the Jeep to overturned onto its right side.
The Cobalt then spun and came to final rest on the right shoulder of the southbound lane.
Police say Whiteman had serious injuries, while her infant male passenger who was in a front facing child safety seat, sustained minor injuries.
Hummel also sustained minor injuries.
Police say Whiteman was transported by Lehigh Valley Health Network MedEvac. Brobst, the infant and Hummel were also transported by Cetronia Ambulance Corps, all to Lehigh Valley Hospital.
According to police, Brobst, Whiteman and Hummel were all wearing their seat belts.
Northern Valley EMS, and Germansville and New Tripoli fire departments assisted at the scene.
