UPPER AND LOWER MILFORD COLUMN
Nestled in the hillside along Powder Valley Road is the Schubert-Graber log house, once home to settlers in the mid-1700s. Considered one of the oldest standing homesteads in Upper Milford Township, this little treasure has been recognized by the U.S. Park Service and placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Hivel Und Dahl Preservation Society has taken up the challenge to save the log house and make it a publicly accessible, gateway park to the scenic, historic Powder Valley area.
Once the house has been restored, the focus will be on the ways the property can be utilized by neighbors and friends. Children may learn how early settlers lived and worked, families may picnic under the maples and participants in the Lehigh County Log Cabin Trail may visit and study the cabin.
The Hivel Und Dahl Preservation Society meets 7 p.m. quarterly on the last Tuesday in March, June, September and November at the Upper Milford Township building. All are welcome. This month’s meeting will be Sept. 24.
The society will sponsor “A Gathering at the Cabin,” 3 to 7 p.m. Sept. 14. Stop by the cabin at 6561 Powder Valley Road, Zionsville, and learn more about it and the work the society wants to do. Free hot dogs, chips and drinks will be available. The rain date is Sept. 15.
