‘Get Prepared Parkland’ Sept. 14 at high school

During the August Upper Macungie Township supervisors’ meeting, residents learned Get Prepared Parkland will be offered at Parkland High School from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Sept. 14.

Upper Macungie, South Whitehall and North Whitehall townships will host this safety event.

Everyone is invited to participate in demonstrations and presentations to earn giveaways.

There will be CPR and fire extinguisher training, burglary prevention, school bus, firearm, car seat and home generator safety presentations, junior firefighter obstacle course and survival kit preparation for home and car.

In other matters, Lehigh Motor Inn property in Kuhnsville, was the subject of complaints about its condition.

Supervisor Jim Brunell noted the property would classify as a blighted property.

Fellow Supervisor Sean Gill said the owner had five years to take care of the problem and remove all the offensive materials and buildings. The applicant was notified the township will take action to remedy the situation.

In other matters, Cetronia Road will be posted with warning signs noting the curves in the road, and the water problem on Blue Barn Road will be handled with a pipe the township will install.

Three proposals were accepted by the board for third party code inspector with Barry Isett and Associates winning the appointment.

The pipe lining project bid was accepted and issued to Insituform. Upper Macungie’s share of the project was $118,147.90.

Trick-or-Treat Night was set for 6-8 p.m. on Oct. 25 with a rain date of Oct. 26.

Commissioner Grant Grim’s fire report showed 276 responses for Cetronia, and a total of 129 emergency responses by the fire companies.

Station 8 gained one new member. Station 25 welcomed three new members but lost four. Station 56 brought in two new members but lost one.

Chief Edgardo Colón gave the police report. Total calls for service were 875 for the month of July.

Two hundred eighty eight traffic citations were issued. DUI offenses topped the list of crimes with 19 while disturbing the peace came in at 13.

The K-9 Corps was involved in one tracking, one narcotics, two stop assists and two public demonstration assignments.

The motor carrier program had 61 inspections with 77 violations discovered and 17 citations issued.

Driving Enforcement had two stops in July. On July 17, officers were at Grim Road.

On July 24, they were at Schantz Road. The high speed was 59 mph at both sites.

The 2019 Junior Emergency Services Academy was held the week of July 22 under the auspices of the police department, Cetronia Ambulance Corps and the township fire department.

Kids ages 12-16 received the opportunity to learn about first responder skills including defensive tactics, building clearances, crisis negotiation, traffic stops, evidence collection, digital forensics and others.
