EHS golf team features deep line up in ‘19

The Emmaus golf team could be pretty tough to beat this season.

The Hornets return most of last year’s line up from a team that went undefeated in the regular season, won the District 11 Class 3A and title and missed out on an email title via a tiebreaker.

“I think we’re going to be really strong,” said head coach Mo Bryan.

Her team returns two-time EPC girls champ Michelle Cox at the top of the line up. Heading into her junior season Cox, a two-time regional qualifier, is a team leader in search of her first district gold.

Also returning are sophomores Matt Zerfass and Aiden LeBlanc. Zerfass shot 81 in last year’s district tournament and Zerfass tied for 11th with an 81.

Returning juniors Nate Seidel and Sean Jaeger will also be among the team’s top players this season, along with freshman John Keba and senior Nick Thoma.

Sophomores Patrick Bova and Andrew Taskalos, junior Colin Wang who are in their first year with the team, could also earn a spot in the line up.

“I think we’re going to be really strong,” said Bryan.

Emmaus could have the deepest line up the league, with 6-8 players capable of playing in the 70s on any given day. That should allow the players to stay loose takes some pressure off.

“The kids know if they have a bad hole they know it’s fine and if it’s not their day, it’s somebody else’s day,” said Bryan. “I think that makes them a little more confident.”

Assistant coaches for this year’s team are Patty Cox and Mike Mihalik.

Emmaus opened the season with wins over Northampton and Liberty on Aug. 15 at Bethlehem Municipal. The Hornets’ top five shot 80 or less for a 374, while Liberty (417) and Northampton (445) each had only one player in the 80s.

Zerfass shot the low score of the day with a 69, followed by Cox and LeBlanc with 74s, Keba with a 77 and Wong rounding out the top five with an 80.
