Local first responders will be in the spotlight 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 5, when the Emmaus Public Library, 11 E. Main St., hosts its 19th annual Community Heroes Day.
The event gives children and area residents a chance to check out emergency vehicles up close and meet firefighters, police officers and EMTs in a non-emergency setting.
Free information will also be available to help families prevent accidents, create disaster plans and be prepared in case of an emergency.
“It’s a great way for children to become familiar with first responders and emergency equipment and it’s a good springboard for families to discuss what to do in an emergency and make a family plan,” Sue Monroe, youth services librarian, said.
Created after 9/11 to reassure children there were still firefighters and police officers to protect them, the event caught on and has been held every year since.
Representatives from the Emmaus police, ambulance and fire departments, as well as the Vera Cruz Fire Company from Upper Milford, will be on hand to answer questions and display their gear and equipment.
The Ridge Street parking lot will be closed 5 p.m. to accommodate the emergency vehicles.
The rain date is Sept. 12.
