For the 20th year in a row, the Lehigh Valley Community Foundation has presented Bethlehem Education Scholastic Trust Awards to teachers in the Bethlehem Area School District. At the BASD’s annual convocation Aug. 21, three teachers were announced as award winners in front of their teaching peers in the Liberty HS auditorium.
Recipients in 2019 are Colleen Donegan, Amy Putlock and Karen Lynn.
Donegan, a reading specialist at William Penn ES, received the Seymour and Sophie Haber Award for Excellence in Teaching at the Elementary Level Putlock, a general music and choral director at Broughal MS, received the Bernie Cohen Award for Excellence in teaching at the Middle School Level. Lynn, an ESOL teacher at Freedom HS, received the Anthony Ruggiero Award for teaching Excellence at the High School level. Each received a certificate and monetary award.
In addition to the award presentations, BASD teachers, support staff and administrators heard from BASD Board President Michael Faccinetto via video, Assistant Superintendent Dr. Jack Silva, and Superintendent Dr. Joseph Roy, each providing motivational messages to district staff, challenging them to make a difference in students’ lives.
“Love your students and make them always feel welcome,” Roy said.
The Freedom HS Patriot Band’s drum and fife corps and the Liberty HS Grenadier Band color guard and pipers opened the convocation session with a music presentation.
Teachers, administrators and support staff from the district's 16 elementary schools, four middle schools and two high schools fill the Liberty HS auditorium as they prepare to begin the new school year.
