Officers from South Whitehall and Upper Macungie Township police departments were out in force July 17 on the Route 222 bypass in Upper Macungie Township, as part of the Coordinating Resources to Advance Safer Highways program.

The joint enforcement program which included law enforcement agencies from Lehigh and Berks counties ran July 14-20.

Truckers were their main focus as there has been an increase recently in large rig accidents.

Areas of focus included commercial and noncommercial motor vehicle driver’s behavior such as distracted driving, speeding, failure to use a seat belt, following too close, improper land changes reckless or aggressive driving and cellphone compliance were all safety issues being scrutinized by officers throughout the region.

Police departments from as far away as Lancaster County were monitoring the heavily traveled Route 222 corridor for compliance with these safety issues.
