A “Third Thursday” opening reception will be held 6-8 p.m. Aug. 15 for the “Faculty & Staff Exhibition,” which continues through Sept. 11, David E. Rodale and Rodale Family Galleries, The Baum School of Art, Allentown.

Instructor Dana Van Horn has several works in the exhibit, including a watercolor of two seagulls, a small oil of a white pig in mud, and a large oil portrait of his adult son.

“Logan Van Horn” (2019; oil on canvas; 40 in. x 32 in.) presents Van Horn’s son seated backwards on a chair with dad’s Senegal parrot perched on his left shoulder. The dark brown, wainscoted wall behind him effectively frames the highlighted portrait subjects.

“It was a painting I did shortly before he did the Appalachian Trail. Originally, it had a map of the Appalachian Trail behind him,” says Van Horn, who has been teaching painting classes for adults at Baum for approximately 27 years.

There are two small watercolors by Mellen Reinbold, who recently began teaching multiple mediums at Baum. “Watcher” (2019; watercolor on paper; 4 in. x 6 in.) and “Dusk” (2019; watercolor on paper; 4 in. x 6 in.) are plein air pieces Reinbold created while camping at a friend’s cabin near Williamsport.

“We were sitting out under the stars at night and this was the view down the river,” says Reinbold, adding that “some mystery bird out there” looking at the full moon is the subject of “Watcher.” A silhouette of pine trees frame the dark blue sky above and trail below in “Dusk.

Reinbold teaches printmaking, digital illustration, graphic design, drawing and painting classes for ages nine through 17. She also teaches in Allentown School District elementary schools.

On display is a blue porcelain “Sleeping Mermaid” by instructor Jenny Nahan-Gidley, a “Cortical Necklace” by Sarah Buck Mueller, a pastel of pears by Jacqueline Meyerson, and a print of a woman and pink butterflies by Amy Pirrotta.

“This gives us a chance to see our faculty’s creative process,” said Baum School of Art Director Shannon Fugate of the biannual exhibition. “This is an amazing showcase of the talent that we have here at the Baum School,” Fugate continues. “Every piece is close to my heart.”

Fugate, who has a background in printmaking, photography and fiber, hadn’t decided at the time of the interview what she will exhibit.

Baum School of Art Marketing Director Laurie Siegfried, who assisted Fugate with curating the exhibit, passed on submitting artwork, saying, “I call myself more of an art appreciator than an artist.”

Other Baum instructors and personnel who have work in the exhibit include Lauren Faurl, Rosemary Geseck, Linda Henry, Travis Hill, Jennifer Prichett, Karen Z. Reinfinger, Karri Schreppel, Monika Stefany and Stephanie Wolff.
