More than 100 people gathered at the corner of Hamilton Boulevard and Lincoln Avenue, South Whitehall, on Aug. 3 for a Make the Road PA rally to protest alleged police brutality and to remember the life of Joseph “Joey” Santos of Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.

Santos, who was unarmed, was allegedly shot and killed by former South Whitehall Township Police Officer Jonathan Roselle around 5:44 p.m. July 28, 2018, across from Dorney Park.

The rally took place a block from where Santos was shot.

During the rally, a representative for the Santos family spoke about his life.

She said before Santos’ death, he was making an impact in his community with his logo DREAM: Drugs Ruined Everything Around Me.

According to a Parkland Press article dated Sept. 27, 2018, Detective James Bruchak with Lehigh County Homicide Task Force, testified in court during the Sept. 20 preliminary hearing for Roselle, that the autopsy performed by Forensic Pathology Associates showed Santos had been shot twice in the head and three times in the torso.

Bruchak said methadone, codeine, morphine, hydromorphone and a metabolite of heroin were in Santos’ blood or other body fluids.

Just before the rally, South Whitehall Township Police Chief Glen Dorney arrived to advise Make the Road PA Director Maegan Llerena that the property owner of the Shops At 3900 Hamilton Center did not want them on his property or for the rally to interfere with customers shopping at the stores.

“There are no issues,” Dorney said. “I am here for safety reasons only. I am here to make sure we have a peaceful rally.

“We don’t want to interfere with people’s first amendment rights.”

Llerena, spoke with The Press at the rally.

“Today is a day of remembrance for Joey Santos,” she said. “He was a human being.

“We have an indictment. We need a conviction.”
