Director of operations attends last meeting before retirement

After Robert J. Yanders’ last day as Northampton Area School District director of operations, he’s not going to Disney World.

He’s heading to Maine.

“I attended 480 board meetings. I may have missed two meetings, 12 meetings per year, for 20 years,” said Yanders July 15, attending his last NASD Board of Education meeting as an NASD official.

“I’ve been with Bob a long time - 10 years,” NASD Superintendent of Schools Joseph S. Kovalchik said. “I’ve spent a lot of time with Bob on the projects, improvements and the weather. I will miss him dearly.”

Yanders said he expected his last day on the job to be July 25. He will retire in Maine with his wife, Lynn.

His cabin cruiser boat is ready for the water. He plans to resume his hobby of fishing. Yanders also plans to volunteer in construction for the elderly and persons with needs.

Yanders is a Northampton Area High School, Class of 1975, graduate. He’s a Bethlehem Area Vocational-Technical School graduate.

After working for the NASD maintenance department from 1976 to 1981, he worked for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers 375 from 1981 to 1999. He became NASD assistant supervisor of building and grounds in 1999 and NASD director of operations in 2002.

Yanders noted he still carries his Master Electrician License.

In other business at the July 15 meeting, Kovalchik said the NASD administration was to hold its summer retreat July 20 and 21 to finalize district 2019-20 goals.

Kovalchik said the Lehigh Elementary School project is “a bit ahead of schedule.”

“Hopefully, it’ll stay that way,” Kovalchik added.

Concerning the commonwealth budget, Kovalchik said, “We didn’t receive (word on) the amount of money that we will be receiving. As soon as we know, we’ll let everyone know.”

At the June 24 board meeting, school directors voted 9-0 to approve:
