The Lower Macungie Library Book Club will meet 10:30 a.m. Aug. 7 to discuss “Warlight” by Michael Ondaatje. The book for Sept. 4 is “My Dear Hamilton” by Stephanie Dray and Laura Kamole.

Family Fun Nights continue! Every Monday evening through July 29 there will be a family event including a community drum circle and movie night.

The program “Universe of Sounds!” for ages 3 to 12 years will explore the sounds of space using different instruments and processors 11 a.m. to noon July 18.

“Dance by the Light of the Moon” is an after-hours dance with DJ Jimbo 7 to 9 p.m. July 19.

Teen Thursdays will be offered for students entering grades six through 12. There will be “Animation Station” 2 to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 1 where teens will work on two animation projects. Participants must bring their own device. There will be a teen movie afternoon 2 to 3:45 p.m. July 19.

Explore the galaxy at Galaxy Quest! for grades one to three 10:30 a.m. July 23.

Fun with Ms. Frizzle for ages 4 and up will be held 10:30 a.m. July 25.

Calling all wizards to “The Universe of Harry Potter” 5 to 7 p.m. July 31. The evening is geared toward students ages 3 to 10 years.

There will be a tie-dye day for ages 13 and up 1 to 3 p.m. Aug. 3. Bring your own white clothing item.

There will be a teen book discussion on the book “Feed” by M.T. Anderson 6 to 7 p.m. Aug. 5. Dinner will be provided.

There will be a “Wonders of the Universe Talk and Stargazing” with Eric Loch from the Lehigh Valley Amateur Astronomical Society 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Aug. 5. After the presentation, there will be stargazing outside with telescopes and other instruments.

Explore “Mythology of the Night Sky” 6 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 6 with Karen Maurer from the Lehigh Valley Storytelling Guild.

There will be a middle school snack and share for students entering grades six through eight 2 p.m. Aug. 8. Come and talk about your favorite books or learn about some new ones. Snacks will be provided.

There will be board games, a trivia competition, comic book swap and a photo booth at Star Wars vs. Star Trek Geek Fest 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 10.

There will be a planetarium show 7 to 8 p.m. Aug. 15 at Emmaus High School, 500 Macungie Ave., Emmaus. Weather permitting, visitors will also visit the high school observatory. Seating is limited.

The teen advisory board will meet 3:30 p.m. Aug. 16 for “Back-to-School Bingo.”

The next Friends meeting is 10 a.m. Sept. 21 in the library. Lower Macungie Library will begin accepting book donations Aug. 1. Due to space limitations, no textbooks, VHS and cassette tapes, encyclopedias, magazines, condensed books, outdated medical and travel guides and books in poor condition can be accepted. The fall book sale will be held Nov. 22-23.

The Lower Macungie Pool is open daily noon to 8 p.m. August hours are noon to 7 p.m. There will be a mermaid visit 2 to 4 p.m. July 17. Wildlands Conservancy will have a presentation 2 p.m. July 21. There will be music by “New Passages” with Randy and Margaret Ritter 2 to 4 p.m. July 27 and a DJ pool party with Wesley Works 2 to 4 p.m. Aug. 3. The Lower Macungie Senior Citizens Club meets noon Aug. 5 and 19 at the community center. After a business meeting, members play bingo or card games.

The Lower Macungie Township Community Center offers a number of activities. Classes include youth and adult tennis lessons, theater camps, Tech Trio and sewing camp.

A new Saturday Open Gym time will be offered 10 a.m. to noon for children ages 10-15 with a parent. Family open gym time is 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays for ages infant through 10 years with a parent. Proof of residency is required.

The summer yard waste hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and noon to 7 p.m. Sunday. Yard waste permits are required for drop-off.

My husband and son are on their annual Boy Scout camp trip. At the beginning of the week, the leader assigns each patrol to one day of policing the area and cleaning up. As a patrol leader, Ben is responsible for assigning jobs to his patrol and making sure the job gets done. As parents of this teenager, we know that lots of reminders are usually needed to get the job done. On Thursday morning, the Scout leader went to remind Ben of his assignment. Ben surprised Matt by saying he had assigned everyone their jobs and that everything was already done. Needless to say, we were very proud!
