Avleen Khinda, from Fogelsville Elementary School, took first place for fourth graders in the state for her poster of Smokey Bear.

Gaurika Devrani, a student at Cetronia Elementary, won first place for first graders.

Their posters will go to the Central Atlantic Region which includes Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, National Capital Area, and New York for further judging.

From there, the winning posters will go to the national contest.

Children from first grade through fifth grade are invited to participate in the contest.

Posters could only depict Smokey Bear this year to recognize his 75th birthday.

The contest is sponsored through the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service and National Garden Clubs Inc.

Posters must be sponsored by a garden club that is a member of National Garden Clubs Inc.

Parkland Garden Club sponsored these two winners.

The original Smokey Bear, recognized as the symbol for fire prevention, first appeared in 1944.

The slogan “Only You Can Prevent Wildfires” encourages people to be responsible for fire prevention.

In honor of Smokey Bear’s 75th birthday, the Reading Public Museum has an exhibit by Rudolph Wendelin, who was the full-time artist for the Smokey Bear campaign from 1944 until his retirement in 1973.

The exhibit runs through Aug. 25.
