STUDENT PROFILE - Ben Thomas, Freedom HS - Coordinated by Julie Swan
Grade: Graduated senior
Family members: My family consists of my mom Kathy, my dad Jim, my sister Madeline and my dog Stella.
Favorite subject: Math and science were definitely my favorite subjects in school because I enjoy logic and problem-solving. I like to see things fall into place and get an answer that actually means something.
Activities: I played rec soccer and my senior year I joined a mountain bike racing team with riders from all around the valley.
Next steps: I plan to attend a four-year college and major in mechanical engineering with a concentration in aeronautical engineering.
Career goals: I want to become an aeronautical engineer. My dad flies MedEvac helicopters, so I’ve always been interested in understanding how they work and the math behind what makes them fly.
Heroes: One of my heroes is my late Aunt Karen. She suffered from ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease), but was still one of the most optimistic people I’ve ever known. Her ability to persevere through even the hardest times is something I could only wish to have myself.
Hobbies: In my spare time I really enjoy hiking, kayaking, skiing and pretty much any other activity that takes place out in nature.
Volunteer/community work: I really enjoy volunteering and working with kids. I’ve volunteered for a few different kids’ camps, and I also volunteer at my old elementary school, Miller Heights, a few times a year.
Likes: One thing I really enjoy doing is solving twisty puzzles such as the Rubik’s Cube. I’ve being solving for a few years and I love improving my times on various puzzles. Also, riding roller coasters is one of my favorite things! I started riding the tallest coasters the day I met the height requirements. My favorite coaster to date is Kingda Ka at Six Flags Great Adventure.
Dislikes: One thing I’m definitely not a fan of is fast food. If the restaurants are so fast and cheap, what am I really eating? Also, litterbugs are the worst! The Earth isn’t a garbage can and it shouldn’t be treated like one.
Greatest accomplishment (so far): I think my greatest accomplishment so far is my grades in school. I work really hard to do well, and I’m glad that it’s paying off.
Advice for peers: I think a lot of people get stressed about things way too easily, so I guess my advice would be to just take it easy and just look at the bigger picture.
