UPPER MILFORD TOWNSHIP
There is a new sign in Lenape Park as of this month; it says “Parry Pavilion” and it marks a pavilion dedicated to Roselyn and Robert Parry, in recognition of more than five decades of volunteer service to the township.
The Parrys were both present at the recreation commission meeting June 17 when the sign was unveiled. Prior to the meeting, Roselyn commented that “something must be going on” because there was a larger crowd in attendance than usual.
Recreation Committee Chair Robert Mutchler said the Parrys started helping out in various capacities in 1966, first with the youth sports programs, helping at the snack bar, coaching some of the youth teams, taking care of the flower beds in the parks, painting the park benches and so much more. Robert still works part-time in the parks.
Roselyn was appointed to the recreation committee in 1984 and her husband a year later. She is also an active board member of the historical society.
They started to get involved just a year after they moved to the township.
Since they were both diehard baseball fans, and since Roselyn was a teacher and had always been around kids, the youth sports program and recreation committee seemed like the logical place for them to volunteer, Roselyn said.
“We don’t know when to quit!” she joked.
The couple received proclamations in their honor from Township Supervisor Joyce Moore on behalf of the board, and from representatives of the offices of state Rep. Justin Simmons, R-131st, state Sen. Pat Browne, R-16th and U.S. Rep. Susan Wild, D-7th.
The proclamation from the township reviews their many contributions, and says, in part “The Parrys serve as a role model for active participation within our community. We are honored to dedicate the Pavilion at Lenape Park, in their name, for their generous gift of time and talents to the Upper Milford community.”
Browne’s representative Ellen Kern called the dedication “richly deserved recognition” and the representative from Simmons’ office said “I hope my generation can take something away from you.”
“Thank you for letting us do this,” Roselyn said in response to the accolades.
Mutchler said the plans for the dedication have been in the works for months.
