STUDENT PROFILE-Jared X. Franges, Freedom HS by JUlie Swan

Grade: Graduated senior

Family members: Faith Franges (mother), Tim Franges Jr. (father), Zachary Franges, brother

Favorite subject: My favorite subjects are math and science. Being a numbers and facts driven student, I find myself comfortable in a science class like PLTW Medical Interventions and the preceding courses, as well as a challenging math course like AP Calculus. PLTW is a special science class that gives the student more power to explore and solve problems in interactive labs that serve a purpose other than getting expected results. The class applies science to the real world, which gives it tremendous value. AP Calculus was the most challenging math course I’ve taken and just goes to show how much math is out there, and how little math you really know. It’s one thing to understand calculus and another to apply it to real world scenarios.

Activities: I play varsity volleyball and am also on the varsity swim team. I play club volleyball and practice swimming offseason. I have been swimming since I was eight years old. Being able to be with such a great team made my high school experience 10 times more enjoyable. Both sports, though drastically different, taught me the value in team and friendship in sports and in life. I am also a member of the National Honor Society.

Next steps: I plan to attend a four-year undergraduate program, majoring in biology/pre-med at University of Pittsburgh, Temple University or University of North Carolina. I plan to continue my education at a medical school.

Career goals: I plan to enter the medical field, ideally as an orthopedic surgeon.

Heroes: My father is my hero. He works hard for everything he has and has taught me the value of being an honest, caring, self-reliant and knowledgeable person. He taught me the value of being respectful to other people while maintaining your own personal values.

Hobbies: I enjoy playing and teaching myself guitar in my free time. I am passionate about classic cars and work on restoring a classic of my own. In the summer I enjoy boating.

Current job(s): I lifeguard at the Bethlehem Township Community Center.

Volunteer/community work: I volunteered teaching students to play guitar at East Hills MS and would occasionally perform with them. I volunteered at the Bethlehem Township Community Center and at Physical Therapy at St. Luke’s Hospital Anderson Campus.

Likes: I like sports, the beach, swimming, working with my hands, spending time with family, classic rock, classic cars and helping people.

Dislikes: Cold weather, snow and disorganization

Greatest accomplishment (so far): Surviving high school. In all seriousness, it’s maintaining good grades and scores on AP exams while playing two sports.

Advice for peers: Get involved in as much as possible, grasp every piece of knowledge you can, push toward your goals as hard as possible and enjoy every minute because high school and other periods of your life will be over before you know it.
