Herman shines as Red defeats Gold
Whitehall senior Joe Herman had his share of highlights both on the football field and volleyball court this past season.
As a wide receiver, Herman was a main cog in the Zephyrs’ offense throughout the year. He also was a centerpiece for the boys’ volleyball program, as he captured MVP honors for the East Penn Conference and guided his team to league and District 11 titles.
Herman ended his high school career with another highlight as he caught nine passes for 228 yards and a touchdown to help the Red team to a 28-14 victory over the Gold squad in the 49th Annual McDonald’s All-Star Football Classic at Nazareth High School’s Andrew S. Leh Stadium on Thursday, June 13.
Whitehall was among schools from Carbon, Monroe and Lehigh Counties that comprised the Red squad, while schools from Northampton County as well as Palisades and Phillipsburg (NJ) comprised the Gold squad.
Herman caught a go-ahead, 54-yard touchdown pass from Southern Lehigh quarterback Logan Edmond in the third quarter. The game was knotted at 14-14 at halftime.
He sensed a good night with Edmond as the duo worked well together during the nine days prior. Edmond completed 14-of 18 attempts for 268 yards with three touchdowns, and he also rushed for 41 yards.
Along with Herman, other Zephyrs who saw action were kicker/punter Alex Khouri, and defensive back Jacob Heffner.
“It was a great experience playing in the game and playing with these guys,” said Herman, who will attend King’s University in the fall. “This is a great way to end my high school career. It was a lot of fun out there with all-stars from both teams and come out with a win.
“The whole week we (with Edmond) really hit it off, and the connection was there during the game.”
Others like Catasauqua defensive back Andrew Martinez, who also was a member of the Red squad, also will cherish the memory.
“It was a great experience playing with kids I never thought I would be friends with,” said Martinez. “Also, lining up against EPC (East Penn Conference) kids and competing with them was great.
“Seeing how we match up against them (EPC kids) was one of my favorite parts.”
