Orefield Middle School places second at reading competition

With names such as “Chapter Raptors” and the “Novel Nifflers,” 253 area middle school students organized into 21 teams and competed on April 11 at Lower Macungie Middle School.

They all were seeking top honors in reading comprehension during the Reading Olympics.

Organizers gave each team a list of 45 books to read.

Team “Columbian Book Weasels” from Orefield Middle School placed second.

Each team member received a copy of “Refugee” by Alan Gratz.

English Language Arts teacher Robin Roberts sponsored the team.

Team “Readers of Unusual Sarcasm,” from Northern Lehigh Middle School placed first in the competition while the “Weatherly Wreckers” from Weatherly Area Middle School placed third.

First-, second- and third-place winners received a set of new books as the team prize.

There is no state or higher level of competition.

Eyer Middle School’s “Eye Reads Team 1” placed fourth, and fifth place honors went to team “Book Bandits -Heist No. 2” from St. Joseph the Worker.
